So you’re ready to commit to your fitness program. Awesome! But sticking to it can be easier said than done. With a few exercise motivation tips, though, you’ll be sailing through your regime.
From buddying up to celebrating your successes, here are five tips to help keep you motivated to exercise.
#1 Set goals you can achieve and track them
Deciding what you want to achieve is the first step. Then you need to figure out how to achieve that goal. For example, you might want to run a marathon. Amazing! But any major goal, like running 26.2 miles, can seem like a big task at first. However, if you break it down into smaller steps, you’ll be motivated to tick off each one as you go.
Think of it like your shower routine steps. Your goal is to get clean, but that doesn’t just magically happen. You have to go through a series of steps (turning on the water, undressing, using body wash, etc.) and the same is true of your fitness goal.
Track your progress by ticking off each stage of your journey and that’ll keep you feeling good about yourself.
#2 Be flexible and kind to yourself
On the topic of feeling good about yourself, it’s vital that you give yourself props when you achieve – but don’t go hard on yourself when you slip up. It’s inevitable that other things will knock you off course, and that’s fine. That’s life!
It’s important to find balance in your health and fitness journey and to accept that sometimes – despite your best efforts – it doesn’t always go your way. Plan ahead and do your best to keep at it, but pick yourself up and keep going when there’s a bump in the road. You’ve got this!
#3 Get your loved ones involved
Do you struggle with motivation in the morning? Buddy up with a friend, family member, or work colleague, and let them do it for you! If you know that someone else is relying on you to do their workout, you’ll be even more motivated to get going.
It’s also really inspiring (and fun!) to train with a friend, plus you can do certain activities together that aren’t possible when you’re flying solo. Cheer each other on and you’ll be a great support and source of motivation for each other.
#4 Keep it interesting
Bored of the same old same old? Then mix things up. After all, variety is the spice of life… and fitness programs!
If you’ve got a favorite and you’re happy to stick with it, then that’s totally fine. But if you find the same type of exercise becomes monotonous, create a varied training plan that keeps you interested. It’ll also help work different parts of your body, too. A personal trainer can help you with this, if you’re not sure how to set up a program yourself.
#5 Celebrate your successes and reward yourself
Heading back to the start, and the importance of tracking your journey, this final point is all about noticing how far you’ve come. And not just noticing it, but celebrating it.
When you hit those mini-goals along the way, make sure you acknowledge and enjoy. You can even reward yourself for a job well done. This doesn’t have to knock you off your fitness program, either. It doesn’t have to be chocolates and fatty foods. It could be a pamper session, or it could even be as simple as turning your usual shower routine steps into an at-home spa session.
With these tips, you’ll be able to stick to your fitness program and stay motivated throughout. You’ve got this!
