You’re probably dieting because you want to lose weight and/or be healthier. If you’re like myself and most women out there, you have probably tried every diet there is with little to no results. Why is that?

The general public believes they will be healthier and lose more weight by drastically decreasing calories and restricting or excluding important macronutrients like carbs or fats. The truth is, you will actually have better results when you don’t starve or deprive your body.

DIETS DON’T WORK!

Plain and simple.

A diet a temporary food plan used to get quick results. Quick results sound great until you realize once you stop that diet, you will regain the weight you had lost, and in some cases even more.

Truly, the only way to lose weight and keep it off is by choosing to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle. And, believe it or not, this is actually simpler than most diets. In all my years of dieting, creating a healthy lifestyle was the best and most sustainable route I had ever gone. No strange foods, no crazy restrictions, no feeling of deprivation.

Diet vs Healthy Lifestyle

Diets can be damaging to your physical health as well as your mental health. Think about it; if you’re on a no carb/low carb diet, what is the thing you crave the most? Carbs. You crave them because you know you can’t have them. With your mentality being carbs are “forbidden fruit”, when you finally break off your diet, you will go straight to carbs and begin a binge cycle.

Diets also slow your metabolism, making it harder to continue to lose fat. Your body enters starvation mode when it isn’t consuming enough calories. When this happens, the calories that you do consume are stored as fat because your body thinks it needs to stock up in order to stay alive.

Creating a healthy lifestyle simply means becoming a conscious eater. Be aware of what you’re putting in your body and what your body will do with it. Learning your macronutrients (carbs, fats, proteins) will help you to better understand what foods to eat and when for the best results. Everyone’s body is different, however. Person A may drop 10 pounds only from cutting out soda. While Person B may be eating all the right foods and only lose 5 pounds. Knowing your body is important in order to get the best results.

A healthy lifestyle does not mean restricting yourself from foods you love like pizza, cheeseburgers, cookies, etc. There are tons of healthy versions of your favorite foods that will allow you to get the taste without all the calories. If you haven’t done so, invest in a healthy cookbook. It will be one of the best purchases you’ve ever made! It completely takes the guesswork out of deciding if a recipe is truly healthy or not.

Here’s a recipe example:

Chicken Enchiladas

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • ½ C black bean and corn salsa
  • 1 TBSP southwester chipotle seasoning
  • ½ C fat free sour cream
  • ¼ C fat free cheddar cheese
  • 4 low carb tortilla wraps

 

Directions:

  • Place chicken, salsa, and seasoning in a 9×13 baking dish
  • Bake at 350 until chicken is tender
  • Shred chicken with fork and add sour cream and cheese
  • Return to over for 10 additional minutes
  • Serve in tortilla wraps
